Secrets of sleep

Sleep is a basic human need, even every living thing. Why? Experts do not know the answer for sure. Yet there is no denying the benefits of sleep for body fitness. Not only the health benefits. Sleep makes a person more alert and productive.

To be able to function optimally, a person generally takes seven to nine hours of sleep each night. For some people, this figure is too grandiose. Especially for women. They are the one who most often experience insomnia. Women are also more easily awakened by the sound of snoring spouse, children, and thought disorder.

Then how is it a quality sleep? Sleep is considered qualified if he passes the stages of sleep properly. Stage ends with REM (Rapid Eye Movement) or dream sleep. It is certainly easier to detect, in a sleep laboratory and hardly known by laymen. Benchmark that is easy is, you wake up with the condition of the body fit and fresh. Activity and your daytime productivity
increases.

Insomnia interpreted as difficult to fall asleep or difficulty staying asleep (or both), and who experienced it, will face the consequences during the day. Many women who are unable to fall asleep, they wake at night and could not sleep anymore, and those who wake up too early. Many also fell asleep, but do not feel refreshed when wake in the morning. At every stage of life, the hormone can affect the amount and quality of sleep of a woman. During menstruation, abdominal cramps may wake the girls at night. This is what makes us sleepy during the day. During pregnancy, a challenge to find a comfortable sleeping position could potentially disrupt sleep. So even during and after menopause, hot flashes (night sweats) cause difficulty sleeping for some women.

Then, there is also the cause of sleep problems that need to be addressed in a comprehensive medical and sleep disorders clinic. Two of them are sleep apnea, insomnia is characterized by snoring and difficulty breathing when sleeping at night and restless leg syndrome. The last condition, characterized by discomfort in the legs which can only be removed by moving it. Sufferers are usually difficult to describe this situation. Someone complained of pain, aching, tingling, itching, cold, and others. Read the rest of this entry »

Exact causes of IBS still unknown? Will this embarrassing syndrome have a cure?

Much has been researched about IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. But they are yet to pinpoint an exact cause for the condition. All we have are observations gathered about it and possible factors or triggers.

  • The colon, or large intestine, is lined by the epithelium. It regulates the movement of fluids. Nothing wrong has been found about the epithelial structure in people affected by IBS. And yet, when food moves too quickly or slowly in the colon, it develops a functional disorder. If it is too quick, there is a lapse in fluid absorption, and the result is watery stool. And if it is too slow, there is over-absorption leading to constipation.
  • There is also an idea that the intestinal muscles may have a problem. Normal movement in the colon may be absent in people with this disorder. Which would explain why people experience abdominal cramps?
  • Stress can be responsible. The autonomic nervous system connects the colon with the brain. The connecting nerves become hyperactive under stress and can have an effect on the colon walls. People with the syndrome may have colons which respond to the extra stimuli and contract more than usual.
  • In some people, certain food items have been seen to worsen symptoms, if not exactly triggering them, namely milk products, caffeine drinks, wheat, rye or barley.
  • Bacterial infections are also held as a cause because in some cases the syndrome sets in after an intestinal infection, in which case it is termed post-infectious IBS.

Recent researches are suggesting other avenues, though still unclear and sometimes conflicting. Studies of long-term data about children and their medical history are indicating that antibiotics may heighten the risk of developing the disorder. A neurotransmitter Serotonin is also being linked with the malfunctioning of the colon. Plus, researchers are looking to discover active sources of infection as culpable causes.
